Hi there, I’m Carrie, owner and director of Inner Spring Yoga in New Albany, Indiana. My husband Rob and I have owned the studio since its opening in 2013.
My love of yoga began after the birth of my second daughter in 2006. I was looking for a way to get out of my house, move my body, and alleviate some of the stress of mothering 2 young girls. It didn’t take long for me to realize that although yoga is marketed as fitness and stress-reduction, the benefits went far beyond that and the breadth and depth of yoga was more than what was conveyed in the gym setting I was practicing in.
I was living in a more rural area of Southern Indiana and there were no yoga studios that I was aware of for at least 15 miles, in Louisville, KY. So, I continued to take classes at my local YMCA while getting my hands on as many books about yoga and yoga philosophy as I could. Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar, and The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar were my first teachers.
I continued to grow my knowledge of yoga through personal study, and private asana lessons at my home. As I noticed my life becoming more peaceful I knew I wanted to share these practices with others. I searched all of the Yoga Teacher Training programs in Louisville and started visiting as many studios as I could. That’s when I found Shelli Carpenter and Eternal Health Yoga. The inviting community of Eternal Health coupled with Shelli’s teachings that infused the practice with the philosophy that I’d been learning from my study was exactly what I was looking for. In 2008 I enrolled in Yoga Teacher Training with Shelli and that’s where it all began.
Since completing that training in 2009 I have accumulated over 500 additional hours of training receiving certifications in Yin Yoga, and also Advanced Yoga Studies. I’ve been consistently teaching both public and private classes since that time and have also accumulated nearly 5,000 hours of teaching experience. I’m also a Certified Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist
I’ve been fortunate enough to study with world renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life of the Jivamukti Yoga Method, Doug Swenson, Leslie Kaminoff, Saul David Raye, and Desiree Rumbaugh. I’ve also had the honor of learning from Anna Ferguson of World Peace Yoga, Michael Johnson and Libby Hensley at Asheville Yoga Center, Julie Kirkpatrick of Jivamukti Yoga, Kathryn Templeton and many other amazing and inspiring teachers.
My teaching is a synthesis of of the knowledge I have gained from my many teachers, as well as my own personal study and exploration of the many facets of the system of Yoga. I am passionate about teaching yoga as a spiritual practice, not just another form of exercise. Based in both the Rāja Yoga and Haṭha Yoga systems my classes include the āsana (postures) typical of Haṭha Yoga as well as the teachings of the Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali.
It is my belief that yoga is a practice that anyone, in any body can practice. I am skilled at offering variations of common yoga āsana, as well as using props and modifications to make yoga more accessible. With my Ayurvedic training I can personalize the yoga practice to help you meet your current health and wellness goals. I enjoy teaching students of all skill levels and abilities and look forward to sharing the practices of yoga with you!
